Amazon Shipping in Italy: What It Is and How It Works

Tissquad··Updated October 29, 2026·13 min read

What is Amazon Shipping and why it matters for D2C brands

Amazon Shipping is Amazon's last-mile carrier service available to third-party merchants who ship from their own warehouses. It is fundamentally different from Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), where Amazon stores, picks, packs, and ships your products. With Amazon Shipping, you maintain full control over your inventory and fulfillment process but leverage Amazon's dense delivery network for the final leg of the journey, from your warehouse or 3PL to the customer's door. If you also sell on Amazon and ship marketplace orders yourself (FBM), our guide to Amazon FBM on-time delivery and seller metrics covers the thresholds you have to meet in Q4.

Amazon states that Amazon Shipping delivers within 24-48 hours across Italy, seven days a week, in the locations served by the Amazon Logistics network; its service charter describes delivery in one or two business days. On the public pages we read (October 2026), Amazon does not publish the share of the population covered or a list of excluded areas. For D2C ecommerce brands competing against marketplace giants, Amazon Shipping closes the delivery speed gap that has traditionally pushed consumers toward Amazon's own marketplace.

Delivery weighs on the buying decision. In a 2026 European survey of 8,000 online shoppers in 8 countries, Italy included, 48% said they had abandoned a cart in the previous three months for delivery-related reasons, and 76% said they prefer stores that show a precise delivery date at checkout. These are stated preferences, but they show how much delivery influences the choice. If your delivery times are vague or long, shoppers notice.

How Amazon Shipping works in Italy: the operational flow

The daily operational flow with Amazon Shipping follows a structured process designed for consistency and speed.

Step 1: Order cutoff and label generation. Orders placed on your website (Shopify, WooCommerce, or any other platform) are synced to your warehouse management system. Shipping labels are generated through Amazon Shipping's API, its user portal, or your logistics partner's integrated platform, and a label is valid for 10 days. Your cutoff depends on the pickup window Amazon assigns to your site.

Step 2: Pickup. Amazon collects parcels from your warehouse (or your 3PL's facility) during the scheduled pickup window it communicates to each shipper, up to seven days a week in eligible locations. Parcels can be handed over loose or palletized, but they cannot be dropped off at a location instead. Packages must be labeled and ready for collection.

Step 3: Sortation and routing. Packages go to Amazon's local sortation center, where they are organized for the following day's delivery routes. Amazon's route optimization algorithms plan the most efficient delivery sequence.

Step 4: Last-mile delivery. Amazon says it delivers within 24-48 hours, seven days a week, with no extra charge for weekend delivery. According to its service charter, Amazon Shipping relies on independent third-party delivery operators for the final handoff to the customer, and on the Amazon Logistics network, a failed delivery is reattempted on the following days, for up to three attempts in total. For the 2026 Christmas peak, Amazon Shipping recommends shipping by Monday, December 21, for delivery by December 24, and on December 24 and 31 it delivers but makes no pickups. Our guide to Christmas shipping deadlines in Italy has the other carriers' cutoffs.

Step 5: Tracking and confirmation. Amazon lists SMS and email updates, predicted delivery times, one-time passcodes, photo proof of delivery for most shipments and, for products sold outside Amazon.it, the option to add your company's logo to tracking emails. If you ship under your 3PL's contract, the Amazon Shipping account is the 3PL's, so ask it whether the tracking emails carry a logo and whose. Recipients can set a preferred delivery location and reschedule.

Coverage: what Amazon states and what to check

Understanding Amazon Shipping's coverage geography helps you set accurate delivery expectations and plan your carrier strategy.

What Amazon states:

  • Delivery within 24-48 hours across Italy, in the locations served by the Amazon Logistics network
  • Pickups and deliveries seven days a week, with no extra charge for weekend delivery
  • Shipments within Italy and, for eligible shippers, between Italy, France, and Spain in 2-5 days (October 2026)

What to check before you switch it on:

  • The postcodes of your orders from the past year, to check with Amazon Shipping before activation
  • Dangerous goods: accepted only in some authorized categories and only on the Italian mainland, with Sicily and Sardinia excluded

For brands with a significant customer base in locations outside Amazon's network, Amazon Shipping should be part of a multi-carrier strategy rather than the sole carrier, with another carrier for the locations Amazon does not serve.

Cost comparison: Amazon Shipping vs. traditional carriers

Pricing for Amazon Shipping is volume-based and negotiated with each shipper. Its service charter says rates depend on the delivery address and the parcel size, and Amazon says they get cheaper as volumes grow. Traditional carriers also agree rates customer by customer, so the useful comparison is a quote based on your own shipping profile, not a price list.

Amazon Shipping:

  • Rates by delivery address and parcel size
  • No extra charge for weekend delivery
  • Parcels up to 15 kg and 70x50x50 cm

GLS Italy:

  • Quote-based rates
  • Delivery normally within 24/48 hours throughout Italy (as stated by GLS)
  • Cash on delivery available as an add-on service

BRT:

  • Quote-based rates
  • 24/48-hour delivery in southern Italy and on the islands for ecommerce (as stated by BRT)
  • Cash on delivery among its add-on services

Poste Italiane, Italy's postal service (SDA, Poste Delivery Business):

  • Quote-based rates, with surcharges listed for Sicily, Calabria, and Sardinia, for hard-to-reach and peripheral postcodes, for fuel, and, in contracts billed in arrears, for the peak season
  • Indicative delivery times of 1-2 business days with Express and up to 4 business days with Standard
  • Cash on delivery remitted within 5 business days of delivery, according to its product sheet

For a pure cost-per-parcel comparison, get quotes on the same sample orders. Amazon Shipping's value proposition is speed and tracking. Whether that lowers your total cost depends on your own figures: customer service inquiries about delivery status and repeat purchase rates are worth measuring before and after the switch.

The impact on COD refusal rates and customer satisfaction

For brands offering cash on delivery in Italy, the first point is simple: cash on delivery is not listed among Amazon Shipping's services (FAQ and service charter, October 2026). COD orders therefore go to a carrier that offers it, such as GLS, BRT, or Poste Italiane, and Amazon Shipping cannot be counted on to change COD refusal rates.

What the data does and does not say: We have not found any public, measured data on COD refusal rates in Italy, nor any independent study showing how much faster delivery reduces them. The figures that circulate come from vendors' blogs without a named source. The number that matters is yours: refused or returned COD orders divided by COD orders shipped, tracked by carrier and by zone.

Customer satisfaction is where delivery speed and tracking matter most. In a 2026 European survey of 8,000 shoppers in 8 countries, Italy included, 29.06% said they had stopped buying from a store after a delivery that went wrong. In the 2025 edition of the same survey, 35.1% of Italian shoppers said they would not reorder from a store without reliable tracking, compared with a European average of 24.2%. These are stated intentions, not measured behavior, but they show where customers are lost. Track "where is my order" tickets per 100 orders and repeat purchase rates before and after the switch to see the effect on your own store.

Requirements and setup: what you need to get started

Amazon Shipping is not available to all merchants. There are specific requirements that must be met.

Minimum volume: Amazon Shipping's service tiers start at 40 parcels a day, and Amazon says it is still working to meet the needs of smaller shippers (October 2026). Amazon asks for your average daily parcel volume when you register. For brands below this level, working with a 3PL that already has Amazon Shipping active is the most practical path to access.

Packaging specifications: Amazon has packaging guidelines. Parcels must stay within 15 kg and 70x50x50 cm, and labels must be applied as Amazon specifies. Packaging must be sturdy enough to survive the sortation process without additional overpack. Parcels outside the limits are not accepted.

Technology integration: Labels are generated through Amazon Shipping's API, its user portal, or shipping platforms that already integrate it, and for Amazon orders, also through Seller Central. This requires either direct API integration with your order management system or using a logistics platform that has Amazon Shipping already integrated. Manual label generation is not practical at scale.

Pickup logistics: You need a warehouse or 3PL facility that can prepare all daily orders for the scheduled pickup window. Amazon also asks shippers for a weekly volume forecast: if you do not provide one, Amazon's initial forecast applies, and extra capacity for unexpected peaks has to be requested through its support team.

For foreign brands entering Italy, the simplest path is to work with an Italian 3PL that already has Amazon Shipping integrated and meets the volume thresholds. At Tissquad, Amazon Shipping is one of the carriers we use in Italy, alongside GLS and Poste Italiane.

When Amazon Shipping is the right choice, and when it is not

Amazon Shipping is ideal for:

  • D2C brands shipping 40+ orders daily within Italy
  • Products up to 15 kg and 70x50x50 cm
  • Prepaid orders where delivery speed matters most
  • Brands competing with marketplace delivery expectations
  • Products with high repeat purchase potential where fast delivery drives loyalty

Amazon Shipping is less suitable for:

  • Oversized or heavy items (furniture, appliances, gym equipment)
  • International shipments beyond France and Spain (from Italy, Amazon Shipping only reaches those two countries, for eligible shippers)
  • Very low-volume sellers (under 40 daily shipments without a 3PL that already uses it)
  • Products requiring special handling (temperature-controlled goods; hazardous materials outside the authorized categories or bound for Sicily or Sardinia)
  • Brands that need the carrier to collect COD payments (cash on delivery is not listed among Amazon Shipping's services)

The COD point is important. Amazon Shipping's FAQ and service charter do not list cash on delivery, so route COD orders to a carrier that offers it explicitly (GLS, BRT, or Poste Italiane). This is why many Italian ecommerce operations use a multi-carrier strategy, with Amazon Shipping for prepaid orders where speed is the priority and a carrier that offers cash on delivery for COD orders.

Illustrative scenario: a German fashion brand launching in Italy

This is an illustrative example with hypothetical figures, not measured results. A mid-size German D2C fashion brand (€50-80 AOV, 150-200 daily orders in Italy) was using BRT as their sole carrier through an Italian 3PL. Delivery times averaged 2-3 days nationally, with 3-4 days to southern regions. Their COD refusal rate was 22%, and customer satisfaction scores for delivery were 3.4 out of 5.

After adding Amazon Shipping for prepaid orders (approximately 65% of volume) while keeping their existing carrier for COD orders, their results over 90 days showed:

  • Average delivery time for prepaid orders dropped from 2.5 days to 1.1 days
  • Customer satisfaction for delivery increased from 3.4 to 4.2 out of 5
  • "Where is my order" support tickets decreased by 35%
  • Repeat purchase rate increased by 18% among customers who received next-day delivery
  • Overall shipping cost remained within 3% of the previous all-BRT setup

In this hypothetical example, faster delivery comes at a similar cost because the Amazon Shipping quote is close to BRT's at that volume. Your own quotes and results will differ: measure delivery times, tickets, and repeat purchases before and after the change.

How to integrate Amazon Shipping into your logistics

For brands already operating in Italy with a 3PL, the transition to a multi-carrier strategy including Amazon Shipping involves:

  1. Volume assessment: Confirm your daily shipment volume meets the minimum threshold (or your 3PL's aggregated volume does)
  2. Packaging audit: Ensure your standard packaging meets Amazon's specifications
  3. System integration: Your 3PL integrates Amazon Shipping's API into their WMS and label generation workflow
  4. Routing rules setup: Define which orders go to Amazon Shipping (prepaid, standard size) vs. traditional carriers (COD, oversized)
  5. Testing phase: Run 1-2 weeks of parallel shipping to validate tracking, delivery times, and customer notification flows
  6. Full rollout: Activate Amazon Shipping as the primary carrier for qualifying orders

With Tissquad, you do not have to set up Amazon Shipping yourself. In Italy we ship with GLS, Poste Italiane, and Amazon Shipping, and we choose the carrier for each order based on weight, zone, and cost.

Faster delivery from your own store

Fast, predictable delivery matters to online shoppers. In the 2026 European survey cited above, 76% prefer stores that show a precise delivery date at checkout.

Amazon Shipping, which states delivery within 24-48 hours, opens Amazon's delivery network to independent ecommerce brands. Combined with other carriers for COD and special-handling orders, it lets your own store offer faster delivery in the areas Amazon serves.
